🌸Happy May! 🌸 Celebrating Nurses: The Heart of Healthcare – May 6th, 2025 May is a month rich with celebration—Mother’s Day, graduations, birthdays, first communions, and more. But one day especially close to our hearts at Nursing Liaisons is National Nurses Day, observed on May 6. Many of us have a friend or family member who is a nurse. But do we understand the essential role nurses play in our lives and in the healthcare system? Often not. Nurses are the backbone of care. They provide not only medical expertise but also the compassion, consistency, and connection that patients often need most, especially in a system that is all too often rushed and impersonal. Recently, I cared for a woman who shared her disappointment after a healthcare experience. While her story was just one perspective, it echoed a concern we hear too often: patients feel invisible. Physicians are indispensable, but behind every diagnosis and treatment plan, nurses are the ones who listen, educate, advocate, and truly care about seeing each person for who they are. As registered nurses, trust is at the core of our work. We take the time to listen to our patients—really listen to them—so we can understand what matters most and tailor our care accordingly. That’s why in-home care can be so transformative. Unlike the busy hospital, we have the time and space to offer personalized, dignified care—care that fosters healing not just physically, but emotionally. Did You Know?·     * 65% of older adults in the U.S. are cared for at home by family members.·     * Only 13% live with non-family caregivers; the rest turn to assisted living or memory care.·     * These facilities are regulated at the state level and often require out-of-pocket payment.·     * Medicaid covers just 20% of costs on average (depending on state and condition).·     * Median monthly cost for assisted living: $5,900—but medical and personal care can drive this up to $20,000+. Choosing a Facility? Consider:·     * Staff qualifications and patient-to-staff ratios·     * Availability of on site medical and mental health services·     * State oversight and inspection records . Let’s not forget: these facilities are businesses. While many provide excellent care, others face real challenges—staffing shortages, high patient needs, and resource limitations—which can affect the level of attention and compassion delivered. A Message of Gratitude and Hope This Nurses Day, we honor not just the challenges of our profession, but its heart. Nursing is about connection, service, and growth. Our patients teach us just as much as we teach them—whether it’s a new way of looking at an illness, or the joy of a shared story or favorite book. We’re inspired by both new nurses entering the field with fresh ideas and energy, and experienced nurses who bring decades of wisdom and grace. Together, we are stronger. To all the nurses who care deeply, work tirelessly, and give so much: thank you. And to those who support, refer, or simply believe in the power of nursing—your encouragement means everything. As spring blooms around us, let’s embrace the season of reconnection. Gather with loved ones, celebrate life’s milestones, and most importantly, celebrate the nurses who make your health and healing their priority. Happy Nurses Day—and Happy Mother’s Day!With gratitude, The Nursing Liaisons Team Stay well, stay active, and enjoy the season! Best, Lisa & Ellie, Cofounders |
