Independence Doesn’t Mean Doing It Alone

Every July, we celebrate Independence Day with family gatherings, cookouts, and fireworks. It’s a wonderful reminder of how much we value our freedom and our ability to live life on our own terms.

As nurses, however, this holiday always makes us think about a different kind of independence.

Our experienced Registered Nurses, with decades of combined clinical experience, have cared for thousands of patients and families throughout their careers. One thing has remained constant: almost everyone wants the same thing—to remain as independent as possible.

We have never met someone who wanted to become dependent on others.

Yet every day, we meet people who are facing a new diagnosis, recovering from surgery, or returning home after a hospitalization. They are suddenly expected to manage medications, understand discharge instructions, keep track of appointments, and navigate a healthcare system that has become increasingly complicated. Families want to help, but they are often balancing work, children, and their own responsibilities while wondering if they are doing enough.

Recently, we cared for a woman who reminded us why Nursing Liaisons was created.

She was scheduled for shoulder replacement surgery while also caring for her husband, whose own health was declining. She was more worried about leaving him than she was about her surgery. There wasn’t a family member available to accompany her to the hospital or stay with her afterward.

One of our Registered Nurses picked her up at home, stayed throughout the day, received her discharge instructions directly from her care team, safely brought her home, and remained with her until she was comfortable. Over the next several days, we helped her recover while also making sure her husband had the support he needed.

What stayed with us wasn’t simply that she recovered well.

It was the relief on her face when she realized she didn’t have to navigate everything alone.

That is why Nursing Liaisons was founded nearly 18 years ago.

We believe independence isn’t measured by whether you can do everything yourself. True independence comes from having the right support at the right time so you can continue living safely, confidently, and with dignity.

Sometimes our nurses are with a patient for just a few hours after an outpatient procedure. Other times we’re there for several days or longer as needs change. Every situation is different because every person is different, and every care plan is tailored to meet that individual’s needs.

Our goal has never been to take away someone’s independence.

Our goal is to preserve it, strengthen it, and give patients and families the confidence to move forward.

This Independence Day, we are grateful for the trust patients and families place in us during some of life’s most vulnerable moments. Being welcomed into someone’s home is a privilege we never take for granted.

From all of us at Nursing Liaisons, we wish you and your family a safe, healthy, and Happy Fourth of July.

Happy Independence Day. Because independence isn’t about doing it alone—it’s about having the right support when you need it most.
